The Nzoka Kivuva Foundation, in partnership with local health providers and the Machakos County Health Office, successfully completed a comprehensive health and wellness outreach across five schools in the Makutano area. The initiative reached over 300 students with free health screenings, nutrition education, and mental wellness support.
The outreach program was designed to address the holistic well-being of young people, recognizing that health and wellness are foundational to academic success and personal development.
Comprehensive Health Services
The outreach provided a range of health services including:
- Free general health check-ups
- Vision and hearing screenings
- Dental check-ups and oral hygiene education
- Nutrition education and healthy eating workshops
- Mental wellness and stress management sessions
"This outreach has opened our eyes to the importance of mental health and regular check-ups. We've seen students who were struggling silently now getting the help they need."
Mental Health: A Priority
A key focus of the outreach was mental health awareness. Certified counselors conducted sessions on stress management, building resilience, and recognizing signs of mental health challenges. Students were encouraged to speak openly and seek help when needed.
"We believe that healthy students are better learners," said Advocate Nzoka Kivuva, Executive Director of the foundation. "By investing in their health and wellness, we're investing in their future and the future of our communities."
Collaboration and Sustainability
The outreach was made possible through partnerships with the Machakos County Health Office, local clinics, and community health workers. Plans are already underway to make this a quarterly initiative, with the goal of reaching even more schools and students across Machakos County.
What's Next
The foundation is currently fundraising to expand the program to include:
- Mental health counseling services
- Follow-up health monitoring
- Training for teachers on student wellness
