The Nzoka Kivuva Foundation, in partnership with the Machakos County Sports Office and local football associations, successfully certified 32 local coaches through its inaugural Coaching Certification Program held in Makutano. The program equipped coaches with modern training techniques, child protection protocols, and fair play principles — ensuring that grassroots football in the region is safe, inclusive, and professionally delivered.
The week-long intensive training brought together coaches from 15 clubs across Machakos County, representing youth teams, school teams, and community clubs.
Building a Stronger Coaching Foundation
The certification program covered a comprehensive curriculum designed to elevate coaching standards in grassroots football, including:
- Modern football training methodologies
- Child protection and safeguarding protocols
- Fair play and anti-discrimination principles
- Sports psychology and player motivation
- First aid and injury prevention
- Talent identification and player development
"This certification has equipped me with modern techniques I never knew existed. I now feel more confident and capable of nurturing young talent in my community."
Prioritizing Child Protection and Fair Play
A key focus of the program was child protection and safe sports environments. Coaches were trained to recognize signs of abuse, create safe spaces for young athletes, and promote gender equity and inclusion in their clubs and schools.
"We believe that every child deserves to play in a safe, supportive environment," said Advocate Nzoka Kivuva, Executive Director. "By training our coaches in child protection, we're ensuring that the next generation of athletes can develop without fear of abuse or discrimination."

Impact on Grassroots Football
The newly certified coaches are now equipped to deliver higher quality training to young players in their communities. Many have already begun implementing the techniques they learned, with early feedback indicating improved player engagement, discipline, and enjoyment of the game.
"The difference in our training sessions is already visible," said one coach from Kabaa. "The players are more motivated, more disciplined, and they're having more fun."

Building on the success of the Makutano program, the foundation plans to:
- Expand the program to other regions in Machakos County
- Offer advanced coaching certifications
- Establish a coaching mentorship network
- Provide ongoing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) opportunities
"The foundation is committed to building a sustainable coaching pipeline in Machakos County," said the program coordinator. "Our goal is to ensure that every child in the county has access to a qualified, caring coach who can help them develop both as players and as people."
