In Machakos County, a silent crisis is unfolding among young people. With limited employment opportunities and few constructive outlets for their energy, many youth are turning to drugs, alcohol, and crime — a dangerous cycle that threatens their future and destabilizes their communities.
But there is hope. The Nzoka Kivuva Foundation is using the power of sports to provide an alternative — a safe, structured, and positive environment where young people can channel their energy, build character, and find purpose.
"Before I joined the league, I was hanging around with the wrong crowd. Football gave me something to focus on. Now I'm coaching younger kids and staying away from trouble."
The Hidden Crisis: Youth Drug Abuse in Rural Kenya
Youth unemployment in Kenya stands at over 15%, with rural areas like Machakos disproportionately affected. Idleness, combined with a lack of opportunities, has created a fertile ground for substance abuse, crime, and mental health challenges.
In Machakos, the situation is particularly acute. Many young people — especially those who have dropped out of school — find themselves with little to do and few prospects. Alcohol, drugs, and petty crime become an escape, trapping them in a cycle that is difficult to break.
"Our weekend sports leagues now engage over 200 youth across 8 sub-counties in Machakos. The majority of participants report significant reductions in drug use and improved mental well-being."
Sports as a Tool for Social Change
The foundation's community youth sports programs are designed to do more than just teach football or athletics. They provide:
- A Safe Space – Structured environments where young people can gather without fear
- Positive Role Models – Coaches and mentors who guide and inspire
- Life Skills – Discipline, teamwork, leadership, and conflict resolution
- Mental Wellness – A healthy outlet for stress and anxiety
- Purpose and Direction – A reason to stay focused and avoid destructive behaviors
"We believe that sports is one of the most powerful tools we have for youth development," said Advocate Nzoka Kivuva, Executive Director. "When young people are engaged in sports, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors. They learn discipline, teamwork, and respect — qualities that serve them for life."
Real Stories, Real Impact
Case Study: Michael's Story
Michael Mutua, a 19-year-old from Mwala, had dropped out of school and was struggling with alcohol and substance abuse. He was drifting, disconnected from his community and his future.
"Before I joined the league, I was hanging around with the wrong crowd. Football gave me something to focus on. Now I'm coaching younger kids and staying away from trouble."
Today, Michael is not only clean and healthy — he's also a mentor to younger players in his community. He's discovered a passion for coaching and is now pursuing a coaching certification through the foundation's program.
The Power of Mentorship
In addition to the sports leagues, the foundation provides mentorship and life skills training to participants. Experienced coaches and community leaders work with young people to help them develop:
- Goal-setting and planning for their futures
- Conflict resolution and communication skills
- Career guidance and pathways to employment
- Personal responsibility and ethical leadership
"The mentorship component is what makes our programs truly transformative," said the program coordinator. "We're not just keeping young people busy — we're helping them build a vision for their lives."
What's Next
Building on the success of the program, the foundation plans to:
- Expand to 16 sub-counties by 2027
- Introduce additional sports (volleyball, basketball, athletics)
- Establish a youth leadership council
- Create a mentorship training program for former participants
"We've seen the transformation that happens when young people are given an opportunity to thrive," said the foundation's program manager. "Our goal is to reach every young person in Machakos who needs a safe space and a positive direction."
