In Machakos County, young people are often excluded from decisions that affect their lives. Despite making up a significant portion of the population, they are frequently absent from community meetings, development planning, and governance processes.
The Nzoka Kivuva Foundation is changing this through our youth civic engagement program. We're training young people in Machakos County to participate in governance, advocate for their communities, and lead development initiatives that create lasting change.

The Youth Voice Gap in Rural Governance
In many rural communities, decision-making is often dominated by older generations, leaving young people without a seat at the table. This youth voice gap has serious consequences — policies and programs that don't reflect the needs and aspirations of young people are less effective and less sustainable.
In Machakos County, the situation is changing. The county government has shown a growing commitment to youth participation and public engagement, and the Nzoka Kivuva Foundation is working to ensure that young people are equipped to take advantage of these opportunities.
"Our civic engagement program has reached 150+ young people across 8 sub-counties in Machakos, with 12 community forums where youth have presented their ideas to local leaders. Participants report an 90% increase in their confidence to advocate for their communities."
Our Civic Engagement Model: From Silence to Leadership
The foundation's program is designed to take young people on a journey from silence to leadership, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to participate effectively:

"Young people have so much to offer," said Advocate Nzoka Kivuva, Executive Director. "They have fresh ideas, energy, and a deep commitment to their communities. But they need to be given the tools and opportunities to contribute. That's what we're doing."

Case Study: Esther's Journey
Esther Muthoka, a 22-year-old from Kibwezi, had always been passionate about her community but felt her voice didn't matter. She attended community meetings but was often dismissed because of her age. She felt invisible.
"For the first time, I feel like my voice matters. The foundation taught me how to speak up, how to advocate for my community, and how to be a leader. I'm no longer waiting for change — I'm creating it."
Through the foundation's civic engagement program, Esther learned how to advocate for youth-friendly policies. She now represents her community at county-level planning meetings and has successfully advocated for the construction of a new youth center in Kibwezi.

What's Next
Building on the success of the program, the foundation plans to:
- Expand civic education to all 18 sub-counties in Machakos
- Establish a youth council to influence county policies
- Create a youth-led community development fund
- Build partnerships with the county government for youth-inclusive planning
"We're building a generation of young leaders who will shape the future of Machakos County," said the foundation's program manager. "Our goal is to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to contribute to their community."
